Syria Protests Jordanian Airstrikes After Civilian Deaths in Daraa
The Syrian Foreign Ministry called in Ambassador Sufian al-Qudah and presented him with an official note concerning the strikes on civilian locations, according to reports.
The diplomatic move followed an agreement reached a day earlier by Syria and Jordan to establish a joint security committee. The proposed body will investigate the airstrikes, improve security coordination and help protect civilians while respecting Syrian sovereignty.
The agreement came after a telephone conversation late Tuesday between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
During the call, Safadi expressed deep regret over the reported casualties and conveyed his condolences to the Syrian people. He said the strikes targeted ISIS (Daesh) positions based on intelligence indicating confirmed threats and imminent attacks against Jordan.
Syrian authorities reported that seven people were killed in Monday’s strikes.
However, Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said Tuesday that the operation had killed more than 20 ISIS members and destroyed a major weapons depot.
